My little precious had her Urologist appointment today. They didn't do any ultrasounds but we did schedule one for September. In September they will compare the ultrasound she had while admitted to Cook Childrens' at three weeks and the new ultrasound to see how her kidneys are functioning and to see if there is any scaring from kidney infection.
I really think I have a handle on Caroline's diagnosis, but then I am thrown a curve ball. The urologist mentioned looking laparoscopically (through her belly button) to see if she has ovaries and if so, are they functioning or streak ovaries. If they are functioning, they will leave them. If they are streak, they have to remove them because they have a chance of developing a very aggressive tumor.
I personally never thought the removal of her ovaries would be needed because she has full Turner's (45, XO). In order to have streak ovaries your
chromosomes have to show a Y fragment. From what I understand, Caroline has no Y fragment, so she should not need her ovaries removed. So in a few months I will address this with her genetic counselor and hopefully get more answers. I don't want her to have to go through any unnecessary procedures!
Sometimes I think I have it all figured out, but I don't! Just goes to show how complex her diagnosis is and that it is not all about her just being short.
